Charter of Public Space

This book documents the development of the 'Charter of Public Space', adopted during the Second Biennial of Public Space.

The Charter, translated into eight languages, aspires to be a document for all those who believe in the city and its extraordinary capacity for hospitality, solidarity, conviviality and sharing; in its inimitable ability to encourage social interaction and democratic freedoms; and in its invigoration of these values through its development and allocation of public space.

At the same time, a glance at modern cities will show how economic, social, ethnic, cultural and generational inequalities have worsened over the last decade. This book decrees what public space ought to be, and must be in order to create a stable and sustainable urban community: areas where citizenship rights are guaranteed, and differences are respected and appreciated.
