Caravaggio. World Painting
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is considered one of the world's greatest Baroque artists. His work revolutionized contemporary painting, introducing chiaroscuro, which emphasized the drama and realism of representation. The artist consciously rejected the cult of beauty prevalent in contemporary painting, emphasizing the imperfections of the figures he painted. Initially, this art provoked outrage, but over time it evolved into fascination, thus gaining the artist immense fame. The composition of the paintings and their theatrical style emphasized the central figures, obscuring details and raising suspicions. The painter's adventurous nature did not prevent him from creating outstanding religious depictions, including "The Supper at Emmaus", "The Martyrdom of St. Matthew", and "The Calling of St. Matthew".
