Craftsman Revealed
Adriaen De Vries, Sculptor in Bronze
Dutch sculptor Adriaen de Vries (1556-1626) spent much of his life working for the most discerning royal courts of the age, including that of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. A master of composition and technique, De Vries was relatively unknown until the J. Paul Getty Museum's groundbreaking exhibition in 1999, which firmly established his reputation and afforded a rare opportunity to study in depth a large number of bronzes. "The Craftsman Revealed" is a richly illustrated volume that presents the results of the technical study of 25 bronzes from the exhibition. It provides a concise overview of the artist and his technical methods, as well as detailed case studies of individual statues.
